Design Technology
Intent
At Oaklands, our intention is that every child will have the opportunity to learn about and expand their understanding of design in an inclusive, cross-curricular way.
Our curriculum develops children’s understanding of the world and how we live and work within it. Through investigating technological processes and manufactured products, pupils come to appreciate the important contribution these make to our society.
Implementation
Following the National Curriculum, Design and Technology encourages critical thinking, problem-solving and resilience as children work through the design process, culminating in an evaluation of their outcomes against their own design criteria.
By using a creative and imaginative approach to the design, make, evaluate model, all pupils learn to create products that address real and relevant problems, with a clear purpose and intended user in mind.
From the Foundation Stage to Year 6, children explore textiles, structures, mechanisms, electrical systems and food technology through carefully planned, termly units. They develop a clear progression of skills, knowledge and vocabulary, enabling them to deepen and broaden their understanding and expertise.
Pupils are taught to select and use a range of tools and materials safely and effectively. Where appropriate, they explore different cultures, enriching their understanding of global design traditions. Assessment informs the differentiation, support and challenge provided to each pupil.
As a cross-curricular subject, DT maintains strong links with the wider curriculum. By providing a clear structure for both teachers and learners, we nurture inclusivity and develop autonomous problem-solvers who work independently and collaboratively.
Impact
