Spanish
Intent
At Oaklands School we are committed to making language learning an enjoyable and engaging experience where children develop a richer understanding of other cultures. We want pupils to communicate in Spanish for practical purposes, using both written and spoken language. They will develop their knowledge of Spanish phonics, vocabulary and grammar in combination with developing their skills in language comprehension (listening and reading) and language production (speaking and writing). Children will become aware of Hispanic customs, culture and traditions, developing their awareness of cultural differences in other countries and helping them to foster a more international outlook. Through our scheme of work, we aim to give children a foundation for language learning, understanding how languages work, which will facilitate further language learning in the future.
Implementation
Spanish lessons at Oaklands School provide learning experiences that engage, enthuse and motivate language learners in key stage 2. Lessons will be taught using the Kapow Primary Spanish scheme once a week and Spanish is incorporated into the class environment throughout the week. Lesson duration increases incrementally in each year group (from 30 minutes in Year 3 through to 50 minutes a week in Year 6).
In EYFS and KS1, children are exposed to the Spanish language through short topics on simple vocabulary (such as colours, numbers or animals and also linked, where possible, to their class topics). Pupils repeat and respond to vocabulary in a variety of games as well as joining in with simple songs.
Using the Kapow Primary Spanish scheme, pupils develop their knowledge and skills in Spanish based around a variety of interesting, relevant topics with motivating end outcomes. They begin by developing confidence and accuracy with oral skills, then increasingly apply their knowledge to extended reading and writing as they progress through KS2. Key skills, grammar and vocabulary are revisited throughout the scheme to allow pupils to revise and build upon their previous learning.
Lessons incorporate a range of teaching strategies, such as independent tasks, paired and group work, games, role-play, actions, stories, rhymes, puppets and ICT to encourage children to have an active engagement with learning languages. Activities are adapted and extended to ensure that lessons can be accessed and enjoyed by all. Cultural links are incorporated into different topics to reinforce children’s understanding of the Hispanic-speaking world.
