“The more that you read, the more things you know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go!” – Dr Seuss.
Our vision at Oaklands Community Primary School is to empower children to acquire, demonstrate, articulate and value the knowledge and skills that will support them as life-long learners and competent communicators.
English is for everyone. Our children are encouraged to express themselves and reinforce their opinions with thoughtful, reasoned arguments: speaking and listening skills are carefully crafted and include, public speaking, debating, conscience alley and drama activities to assist in the development of vocabulary.
We foster a passion for reading and writing: quality texts are used to inspire and promote the love of reading and writing throughout the school. We recognise that the precise acquisition of language skills forms firm foundations; children leave Oaklands Community Primary School with secure English skills that allow them to thrive and become skilful learners in a multitude of subjects.
Phonics and Reading
Keystage 1 Reading scheme- system of book bands are used across different reading schemes to indicate the reading level of each book. Book bands have been established using The Oxford Reading Tree Scheme. You will see our Oxford 'levels' on the side of your child’s reading books. Other books are integrated into this unique scheme to provide a broader range of reading material to widen the reading experience and provide a high level of interest and engagement such as BBC ‘Alpha-blocks’, Bug Club, Rigby Rockets, Songbirds, and Storyworlds. Staff are trained to read and band the additional books. Your child’s reading is closely monitored and once your child has become a competent reader in each band they will progress to the next level.
