Science

Intent

At Oaklands we foster a love of science and the natural world. Our intent is to give every child a broad and balanced science curriculum which enables them to confidently explore and discover what is around them, so that they have a deeper understanding of the world we live in. We aim to develop pupils’ enjoyment and interest in science by providing exciting, practical hands-on experiences that encourage curiosity and questioning, whilst developing their scientific language and vocabulary.

Teachers create a positive attitude to science learning within their classroom and reinforce an expectation that all children are capable of achieving high standards in science. We have a whole school approach to the teaching and learning of science.

Implementation

In Foundation Stage, Science is covered in the ‘Understanding the World’ area of the EYFS curriculum. It is introduced through taught sessions and through activities that encourage every child to explore, problem solve, observe, predict, think, make decisions and talk about the world around them.

In Key Stage 1 and 2, Science is taught using clear and comprehensive plans in line with the National Curriculum. Skills of working scientifically are embedded into each lesson and children are encouraged to ask questions to deepen their understanding. Teachers use concept maps at the start of each unit to elicit children’s prior knowledge on the topic and precise questioning is used to formatively assess children’s learning and explore any misconceptions. Where relevant, educational visits and visitors are used to support and enhance the children’s learning. Cross-curricular links are made where appropriate.

Impact

Our Science curriculum will ensure that children at Oaklands:

· have a love and passion for science and can identify clear links with the work undertaken in class and science in the real world.

· achieve at least age-related expectations in their science subject knowledge and skills at the end of the year.

· are able to ask questions and confidently work collaboratively and practically to investigate and experiment.

· are well-prepared for the next stage in their educational journey.
