What is the Pupil Premium?
Pupil Premium was introduced by the Government in 2011/12. It provides additional funding to help schools ‘close the gap’ between children who are vulnerable to underachievement and other children at the school.
The premium is used to support students who are currently on Free School Meals (FSM) or have been registered for FSM in the past six years; students in care who have been looked after by local authorities for more than six months also continue to qualify for the Pupil Premium.
Parents and carers can help the school claim all the money they can by making sure that if their child is eligible for free school meals, they register them with us – even if they’re not going to have a school lunch or if they are in Key Stage 1 where they automatically get a free meal.
Why is there a Pupil Premium?
The government have recognised that some pupils who are eligible for Free School Meals have lower educational attainment than those who have never been eligible.
Pupil Premium at Oaklands
We strongly believe in early support to ensure our pupils who are entitled to Pupil Premium funding perform at least as well as their peers. We have included a breakdown summary regarding how our Pupil Premium Grant is calculated and distributed in the documents below.
To minimise the effects of COVID-19 on children, the government also announced £1 billion of funding to support all children and young people to catch up lost time after school closure. This is particularly relevant for pupils who need additional support to reach the same level of attainment that they would have achieved had they been in school. At Oaklands, we have decided to use our funding alongside our Pupil Premium Grant as we already have a comprehensive support package in place. This support is available to all children to minimise any adverse effects they may have suffered due to the pandemic. The spending and impact of this grant is reviewed annually.
